Cyprus and the endless rant potential

Bless this unearthly island and its socially confused population, I assume that we will never run out of topics to rant about. Although I sure hope we do…

The grass is always greener on the other side. Is it though?

Well, in short yes. Because it barely ever rains on the island and even if it does, we make sure to roast that green mother*****r down by throwing our half lit buds out the car window on the highway. Which is fine, we’ll bring the grass back if the visiting oligarchs need it for their golf courses.

That being said, many of us have had our share of travelling, moving around, meddling with people of different backgrounds, and filling out mountains of forms for various public or private sectors and their bureaucratic mazes. However, Cyprus has its particularities, a charm if you will; underneath its sunny beaches and delicious cuisine, the country is populated by ethnically and ethically meddled human beings. We’re special, bitches.

Where is Cyprus?

We are geographically located in Asia, our culture is Greek (well half of it – the other half is Turkish, Armenian, and Maronite), our mentality Occidental, our ambitions are British and our origins are… shady to say the least. We shop like Americans, shake it to balkan-like beats, and drink like vikings.  Did I mention that technically, we’re Europeans? As far as our language(s), religion(s), sports, “politics”, and ideologies are concerned, welp tldr – this is an entirely different rabbit hole.

If you don’t like it go back to [insert country you look like you’re from].

Living and staying here is often a choice, a sober one at that (NB: Contrary to popular belief, many of us weren’t stranded here on a shipwreck.) A choice that has been inevitably and repeatedly regretted and re-evaluated, yet we stood by it. Because what does make it unique is the confusion and madness we’re surrounded with every single day. Yes, we are a mess, but we’re a talented mess, a mess with potential, a mess with humour and halloumi.

We could be great because, amongst others, we also produce great and colourful people, hungry for progress, and if we don’t drive them away we can evolve into something awesome. [I would’ve inserted here the national anthem but we’re currently using the Greek one, so it’s kinda awkward.]

Bottom line is that this small piece of land floating in the mediterranean is worth it, regardless if it treats us like a teenager treats its parents when his friends are around.
